“Keir Starmer Raises Concerns Over India’s Purchase of Russian Oil”

-

Keir Starmer has raised concerns with India’s Prime Minister regarding the purchase of Russian oil, which is being used to support Russia’s aggressive invasion of Ukraine.

During a meeting in Mumbai, the Prime Minister discussed the controversial issue with Narendra Modi, despite Modi recently sending birthday wishes to Russian President Vladimir Putin. India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian oil has prompted penalties from Donald Trump.

Starmer confirmed that the topic of India buying Russian oil was addressed during his discussions with Modi. Both leaders outlined steps being taken to resolve the conflict, emphasizing efforts to address the Russian shadow fleet and their leadership of a coalition working towards a resolution.

Additionally, Starmer highlighted the case of British Sikh activist Jagtar Singh Johal, who has been detained in an Indian prison for nearly eight years without a conviction. He expressed ongoing support for consular cases, mentioning that the Foreign Secretary would meet with Johal’s family in the near future.

Following the discussions, Gurpreet, Jagtar’s brother, expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in his brother’s case despite the Prime Minister’s acknowledgment. Despite differences over the Ukraine conflict, the PM emphasized the strong ties between India and the UK.

Concluding his visit to Mumbai, the PM praised the new trade deal signed in the summer, stating that it is creating opportunities for British businesses in India. He also noted the collaboration on three upcoming Bollywood films to be produced in the UK, highlighting the potential for partnership between the two countries.
