Labour is set to announce a new Youth Guarantee, promising a paid job for all young individuals. Chancellor Rachel Reeves will introduce the initiative, including benefits sanctions for those who reject the offer, emphasizing the need to prevent wasted potential.
During her conference speech today, Reeves will present the opportunity of paid work to young people who have been out of work and education for 18 months. The aim is to combat long-term youth unemployment, as one in eight individuals aged 16-24 are currently not engaged in education, work, or training.
Reeves will emphasize the importance of eradicating youth unemployment, stating that no young person should be left without prospects. The focus is on creating a society where everyone contributes, and hard work is rewarded fairly.
Under the proposed scheme, every young person on Universal Credit for 18 months without earning or learning will receive an offer of paid work. However, individuals may face consequences like losing benefits if they decline the opportunity without a valid reason.
The government’s efforts to increase youth employment are highlighted, with a significant number of 16-24-year-olds currently inactive in education or work. The plan to revamp the benefits system and boost employment rates is spearheaded by newly appointed Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden.
