-

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez exits the Monterey Open after a defeat to Rebecca Sramkova of Slovakia in a three-set match on Wednesday. Fernandez claimed the first set but succumbed to Sramkova’s strong performance in the second and third sets, losing the match that lasted two hours and nine minutes.

Having recently triumphed at the Washington Open, Fernandez, aged 22 and hailing from Laval, Que., entered the WTA 500 tournament as the seventh seed and a two-time champion on the hardcourt. Despite her victory at the Washington Open, Fernandez faced early exits at the National Bank Open in Montreal and the Cincinnati Open.

Meanwhile, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and her partner Erin Routliffe continue their participation in the Monterey Open and are scheduled to compete against Russians Kamilla Rakhimova and Irina Khromacheva later in the day.
