London Mayor Sadiq Khan has criticized US President Donald Trump, labeling him as racist, sexist, and Islamophobic. The ongoing feud between the two leaders escalated when Trump referred to Khan as a “terrible” mayor during his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York.
Khan remarked that it seems he is constantly on Trump’s mind, questioning why a Muslim mayor leading a diverse and successful city would occupy so much space in the President’s thoughts. When asked if he believed Trump was Islamophobic, Khan stated that Trump has displayed racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic behavior.
Responding to Trump’s criticism of his mayoral performance, Khan highlighted the record number of American visitors to London under his leadership, emphasizing the city’s global prominence in culture, foreign investment, sports, and overall potential for individuals to thrive.
Cabinet minister Pat McFadden dismissed Trump’s claim that London desires sharia law, asserting that London operates under British law and is a valuable asset to the UK. Supporting Khan, other Labour MPs praised his efforts in promoting diversity, LGBTQ+ rights, and enhancing various aspects of city life.
In defense of Khan, MP Rupa Huq denounced Trump’s comments as falsehoods, while MP Rosena Allin-Khan called for the US ambassador to address Trump’s Islamophobic remarks. The MPs emphasized London’s commitment to diversity and rejected any form of bigotry or racism.
