A man has been convicted on all charges after attempting to assassinate Donald Trump during his 2024 presidential campaign and later trying to harm himself with a pen following the verdict.
Ryan Routh, aged 59, allegedly conducted 17 trips to surveil Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course before the attempted attack. It is claimed that he concealed himself in the bushes with a rifle as Trump’s golfing entourage approached. Routh faced multiple charges, including trying to assassinate a prominent presidential candidate, possessing a firearm for a violent crime, and assaulting a Secret Service agent, all stemming from the incident on September 15 the previous year.
Jurors swiftly reached a unanimous guilty verdict on all counts, potentially leading to a life sentence for Routh. Prosecutors detailed the extensive planning Routh undertook for the assassination plan, which involved purchasing a high-caliber weapon, monitoring Trump’s movements, and using multiple disposable phones.
The assassination attempt on September 15, 2024, occurred just weeks after Trump narrowly escaped being shot in the ear during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, by Thomas Crooks, a 20-year-old who was subsequently killed by Secret Service counter-snipers.
In response to Routh’s conviction, Attorney General Pamela Bondi remarked, “Today’s guilty verdict against would-be Trump assassin Ryan Routh underscores the Department of Justice’s dedication to holding accountable those involved in political violence.”
