“Man in Incel Threat Case Remorseful at Sentencing”

-

DeAndre Anderson, a 25-year-old man from Burlington, Ontario, expressed remorse during his sentencing hearing for making threats towards two women. His actions included posting online about violent intentions. Anderson, who pleaded guilty in November, faced charges of uttering threats in support of the incel ideology. The RCMP considered these charges to be related to terrorist activities, following a collaborative investigation with the Halton Regional Police Service and the FBI.

Using the alias MrUgly420, Anderson posted on an incel website between December 2022 and April 2024. In these posts, he expressed violent desires towards a former high school classmate and made threats to harm women randomly. The Crown prosecution requested a five-year sentence for Anderson, while the defense presented its arguments during the recent court proceedings.

Anderson acknowledged his regret for his online statements, admitting he was not thinking clearly when posting on the incel forum. The content of his posts included admiration for mass killers and detailed plans for violent acts. Authorities found evidence suggesting Anderson posed a danger to society, leading to his denial of bail last summer.

The prosecution highlighted Anderson’s mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and ADHD, exacerbated by alcohol consumption. A psychiatric report indicated low self-esteem and a danger to public safety. Despite the defense’s plea for a lenient sentence, citing time served and Anderson’s willingness to seek therapy, the prosecution recommended a five-year term based on various factors, including his age, guilty plea, and absence of prior criminal records.
