Marco Arop Eyes Gold at Canadian Championships

-

Marco Arop is feeling better than ever before as he prepares for the Canadian track and field championships in Ottawa. The Olympic silver medalist in the 800 meters is gearing up for the event, which spans from Wednesday to Sunday. Arop, hailing from Edmonton, is aiming to capitalize on his strong season leading up to the world championships in Tokyo this September.

Expressing his confidence, the reigning world champion stated, “I believe I’m currently in peak condition, and I am eager to showcase it.” Arop emphasized his desire to end the season on a high note by aiming for the world final, coinciding with his birthday this year, making it a special celebration if he can participate and defend his title.

The 26-year-old athlete shared his goal of improving by one percent annually. He diversified his training regimen by incorporating altitude training and increasing mileage-based sessions, enhancing his endurance capabilities. Arop kicked off the year impressively by clinching victory in all three of his Grand Slam races in the 800 meters, facing tough competition. Although the times did not meet his expectations, the competitive environment, especially in the early part of the season, proved beneficial, along with occasional ventures into the 1,500 meters.

Following his strong start, Arop achieved a season-best time of 1:42.22, securing second place in a Diamond League meet in London on July 19. Building on his personal best of 1:41.20, a national record and fourth all-time, which he set during his silver-medal performance in Paris last year, Arop expressed that the experience significantly boosted his confidence.

Reflecting on his journey, Arop stated, “I feel like I’ve gained more confidence since last year. Despite facing challenges leading up to the Olympics, I learned to trust my abilities and perform when it matters most.” The athlete acknowledged the impact of his first Olympic experience in Tokyo, mentioning how being the world champion and having extensive competition experience helped him navigate through doubts and uncertainties.

Arop outlined various factors that influenced his performance in Paris last summer, including minor injuries and doubts creeping in due to the fast-paced competition environment. Despite these challenges, he drew strength from his previous experiences and achievements, ultimately propelling him forward.

The Canadian track and field championships in Ottawa will feature prominent athletes like sprinter Andre De Grasse, world indoor shot put champion Sarah Mitton, and Olympic hammer throw champions Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg. The event schedule includes the women’s hammer throw final on Thursday, women’s shot put and men’s 100 meters on Friday, men’s hammer throw and 800 meters on Saturday, and the men’s 200 meters wrapping up the championship on Sunday.
