A mother persisted for a decade to seek answers for troubling symptoms that doctors dismissed as “anxiety.” Tameika McBride had been experiencing symptoms since 2015 but was repeatedly assured by doctors that everything was normal based on her blood tests.
Despite her concerns, it wasn’t until she noticed a significant swelling in her neck a few weeks after giving birth that she demanded further investigation. Following initial reassurances that it was likely benign, an ultrasound revealed the devastating truth: she had cancer.
The 30-year-old stay-at-home mother expressed her shock, feeling like it was a death sentence especially with her young children aged four and two. She described the emotional turmoil she underwent upon receiving the cancer diagnosis.
Tameika recounted her visits to the doctor where her symptoms were attributed to anxiety, despite feeling otherwise content. In 2019 during her pregnancy, she was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, which was managed with medication. However, after discontinuing the medication, she experienced weight gain and swelling, yet her blood work remained normal.
In August 2023, she noticed a visible enlargement of her thyroid, prompting a visit to the doctor and subsequent scans that yielded inconclusive results. Despite the uncertainty, the swelling eventually subsided.
In November 2024, Tameika discovered a swollen lymph node in her neck, leading to further medical consultations. Following an ultrasound, she was swiftly informed of the cancer diagnosis, marking a significant turning point after years of health concerns being dismissed as anxiety.
Subsequent tests confirmed thyroid cancer and Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition affecting thyroid function. The cancer was identified as a rare aggressive type that had spread extensively, necessitating immediate treatment.
In June, Tameika underwent radioactive iodine treatment and had to isolate in the hospital for 24 hours. Despite the challenges, she expressed gratitude for the support received during this trying period and the ongoing treatments to combat the cancer.
Post-surgery scans revealed lingering cancerous lymph nodes, requiring continued treatment and high-dose Vitamin C infusions. Tameika reflected on the difficulties faced, including post-cancer fatigue, uncertainty, and the balancing act of caring for her children while prioritizing her recovery.
She acknowledged the outpouring of kindness and generosity from others, emphasizing the significance of their support in enabling her to access necessary treatments.
