Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation’s council and chief have initiated the dispersal of funds from a federal agricultural benefit agreement, commonly known as the ‘cows and plows’ settlement. Chief Melissa Tavita stated that the distribution process has commenced, describing it as a “bittersweet moment.”
The settlement, totaling nearly $99 million, with the federal government aims to fulfill historical commitments outlined in Treaty 4. This agreement promised First Nations agricultural support, including livestock and farming equipment. Chief Tavita expressed frustration at the challenges faced by their people in securing these promises, emphasizing the importance of rectifying past injustices.
Located northeast of Regina, Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation recently celebrated the agreement with a ceremony. This development aligns with other Indigenous communities across Canada, such as Big River First Nation and One Arrow First Nation, reaching resolutions with the government concerning longstanding treaty obligations.
In the case of Muscowpetung, each member is set to receive $40,000 from the settlement. For members under 18, the funds will be placed in a secure trust, accruing 4% interest annually until they reach adulthood.
Looking ahead, the nation plans to allocate the remaining settlement funds towards initiatives that promote long-term prosperity. These investments will encompass housing development, infrastructure upgrades, water system enhancements, and youth programs. The focus is on uplifting the community and fostering sustainable growth.
Federal Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Rebecca Alty, present at the Muscowpetung ceremony, emphasized the significance of this settlement in the ongoing reconciliation journey. She underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between the government and Indigenous communities to advance mutual goals.
Chief Tavita highlighted the upcoming community meetings to keep members engaged and informed about the progress. The council is committed to fostering a positive and transparent relationship moving forward.
