Luguentz Dort marked his NBA victory with a grand procession in his native Montreal neighborhood on Thursday. The Oklahoma City Thunder player proudly displayed the Larry O’Brien Trophy from a Lamborghini, leading a parade along de Charleroi Street in Montréal-Nord. Dort later mingled with locals and media at Parc Pilon, where a large crowd awaited him.
Many children, donning Dort’s OKC jersey number 5, eagerly took to the court at Parc Pilon, while supporters displayed signs proclaiming “Lu the champ” and “Mtl-Nord proud of its champion,” cheering “Luuuuu!” as Dort addressed the crowd. Dort expressed his desire to share his success with his community, emphasizing the significance of being a role model for local youth.
The day before the parade, Dort was honored at Montreal City Hall by Mayor Valérie Plante, who commended his community engagement and on-court achievements. Alongside Canadian MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Dort played a key role in the Thunder’s NBA championship victory over the Indiana Pacers, featuring Montrealer Bennedict Mathurin.
Growing up in close proximity in Montréal-Nord, Dort and Mathurin epitomize the borough’s rich Haitian heritage. Dort’s NBA triumph makes him the fourth Montrealer to secure an NBA title, joining the ranks of Bill Wennington, Joel Anthony, and Chris Boucher. Known for his tenacious defense and scoring prowess, Dort’s contributions were pivotal to the Thunder’s success, earning him accolades and recognition despite going undrafted in 2019.
