WARNING: This article contains spoilers from You on Netflix.
You season five is just around the corner and fans are revisiting the dramatic conclusion of the fourth outing ahead of its release.
It’s been over two years since the fourth season of You premiered on Netflix, where Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) abandoned his life in New York to start anew as Professor Jonathan Moore in London.
However, as fans have come to expect, Joe’s dark past soon catches up with him as he becomes obsessed with unmasking the “Eat-The-Rich-Killer” targeting his new acquaintances.
The plot takes a drastic turn in episode seven when Joe becomes convinced that politician Rhys Montrose (Ed Speelers) is the killer and takes him captive.
Here’s a recap of the shocking events that unfolded at the end of You season four.
After being blackmailed by Kate Lockwood’s (Charlotte Richie) father, Tom Lockwood (Greg Kinnear), to “take care” of Rhys, who he believed had spread a damaging lie that could harm his political career, Joe takes matters into his own hands.
Convinced that Rhys is the Eat-The-Rich-Killer, Joe has no reservations about torturing and killing him at his country home.
However, in a stunning twist, a very much alive Rhys appears beside him, revealing that the murderous version of the politician was merely a product of Joe’s own twisted imagination.
It was revealed that Joe had been the one committing all the murders, but due to his dissociative state, he couldn’t recall any of them, believing they were done by Rhys.
Joe doesn’t even personally know the real Rhys Montrose, meaning the person he has murdered is a complete stranger.
Throughout the series, Joe has been in a dissociative state and doesn’t remember imprisoning season three’s Marienne (Tati Gabrielle), who has been trapped for weeks on end.
Viewers are shown flashbacks of what Marienne has experienced from her perspective, with the dissociated Joe terrorising her as she pleads for him to let her go.
Luckily, she doesn’t become his next victim thanks to Nadia (Amy Leigh-Hickman) who uncovers the truth about her professor.
To escape, Marienne takes a large dose of beta-blockers to feign death but when Joe leaves her body, Nadia injects her with a stimulant to revive her, allowing her to escape and be reunited with her daughter in Paris.
After murdering Kate’s dad for encouraging him to kill Rhys, Joe is repulsed by himself, now realising that he can’t escape from his dark side,.
Previously, he was able to justify his murders but as he didn’t even realise he was the real murderer, Joe can no longer control himself.
Fearing that he will now kill Kate like he did with his previous loves, Joe decides to end it all by pushing his dark side, thus himself, off a bridge.
But much to everyone’s surprise, Joe survives the fall and wakes up in hospital with Kate by his side.
He admits to having killed people, but doesn’t confess to murdering her father. Kate expresses her guilt over her role in a business deal that resulted in children developing cancer.
The troubled pair pledge to keep each other honest and good from this point forward, but it’s not long before Joe breaks this vow.
Shortly after being discharged from the hospital, he discovers Nadia and her boyfriend Edward (Brad Alexander) have broken into his flat in an attempt to find evidence of his numerous crimes.
Without hesitation, Joe kills Edward, frames him for Rhys’ murder, and then decides to frame his student Nadia for her boyfriend’s death.
To ensure her silence, Joe threatens to kill Nadia’s entire family, leading her to accept imprisonment on Joe’s behalf and remain silent, fearing for the safety of her loved ones.
In the final moments of the last episode, Kate and Joe are hailed as the new “power couple” during an interview as she ascends to the position of CEO of Lockwood Corporations.
Joe stands by her side, wickedly telling the journalist that he is there “to help” her conquer the world.
And with Joe now unafraid to reveal his dark side, how will his story unfold in the fifth and final chapter of You?
You season five premieres on Thursday, April 24, on Netflix.
