The Niagara River Lions have once again emerged victorious in the Canadian Elite Basketball League. Despite finishing first in the Eastern Conference with a 14-10 record, the River Lions secured a 79-73 win over the Calgary Surge at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, clinching consecutive titles.
Khalil Ahmad, named the Finals MVP, led the River Lions with 16 points and nine rebounds, supported by Nathan Cayo with 14 points and six rebounds, and Ahmed Hill contributing 13 points and six rebounds. On the Surge side, Sean Miller-Moore scored 19 points, but it was not enough to maintain their seven-game winning streak. Jameer Nelson Junior, Evan Gilyard, and Khyri Thomas each added 13 points for Calgary.
Head coach Victor Raso expressed his elation, stating, “It feels incredible. It really does. It’s as special of a moment as I ever had as a coach. This one, for these guys, it just cemented them. I’m really happy for them.” Captain Kimbal Mackenzie echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the remarkable performance of Khalil Ahmad throughout the season.
The River Lions faced challenges this season, with a roster of returning players struggling to maintain motivation during the rigorous 24-game schedule. However, a pivotal seven-game winning streak midseason propelled them to the top of the Eastern Conference. Raso highlighted the team’s resilience and excellence when it mattered most.
Niagara led 42-36 at halftime and maintained control with a 63-51 advantage heading into the final quarter. Although the Surge closed the gap to three points during Target Score Time, the River Lions held on for the win.
The River Lions now stand alongside the 2020-2021 Edmonton Stingers as the only teams to achieve back-to-back titles in CEBL history. Additionally, they are the sole franchises to secure multiple championships in the league’s tenure. The championship trophy was presented by the parents of Chad Posthumus, a beloved CEBL figure and Winnipeg native who passed away at age 33.
