Noa-Lynn van Leuven responds to criticism regarding her participation in women’s darts competitions. The 29-year-old transgender athlete from the Netherlands made history by becoming the first Dutch woman to qualify for the World Darts Championship. Despite a strong start in her debut match, she faced a 3-1 defeat and exited the tournament.

The World Darts Federation (WDF) recently prohibited transgender players from their events, but the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) still allows their participation without any imminent changes. Van Leuven addressed concerns about her eligibility, emphasizing that she complies with all regulations and won’t engage in constant identity debates.

The Netherlands Olympic committee NOC*NSF issued draft guidelines for sports federations on transgender inclusion, hinting at potential challenges in achieving fair competition due to physical differences in certain sports worldwide. Van Leuven clarified that darts relies on skill rather than physical strength, asserting that the guidelines primarily apply to grassroots sports, not elite levels.

Van Leuven acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding future eligibility criteria in the PDC, expressing concerns about the impact on her career and the wider transgender community. Overcoming online abuse and mental health struggles, she secured her place in the upcoming World Championship, marking a significant personal triumph after battling thoughts of despair.

Reflecting on her journey, Van Leuven recounted a period of deep depression and uncertainty about her future. Now reinvigorated and eager to compete, she credits her gradual return to form to renewed passion and determination, culminating in a remarkable comeback to the World Championship stage.
