You need plenty of key skills to be a successful hunter. Navigation and survival abilities are essential – but you’ll also require sharp eyesight. Keeping an eye out for the signs of prey – and then having accurate and consistent shooting – will help to ensure you don’t return home empty handed.
You’ll also need to have strong powers of observation – looking out for tracks, tree markings, animal droppings and other signs animals have passed through. Deer have several adaptations that help them stay camouflaged in a forest environment, enabling them to evade predators and blend seamlessly with their surroundings.
They have coats that are typically brown, tan, or grey, which blend well with the earthy tones of the forest floor, trees, and foliage.
Some – especially fawns – also have spots on their coats that help them disappear into the environment more seamlessly.
It’s so hard to spot deer as they stay very still when they sense danger, relying on their camouflage to conceal them from predators rather than running.
The woodland creatures are able to walk very quietly through their habitat, unlike humans who often have heavier steps.
Deer have a great sense of hearing and smell – so chances are, they will sense if someone is approaching.
Their environment doesn’t help either – as forests can be dense and shady. The countless trees, branches and shadows make it difficult to see what’s lurking between them.
