Oshawa is set to welcome a new professional lacrosse team with the relocation of the Albany FireWolves to the city for the upcoming 2025-2026 season, as announced by the National Lacrosse League (NLL). The team will make the Tribute Communities Centre in downtown Oshawa its home venue.
NLL Commissioner Brett Frood expressed enthusiasm about the move, highlighting Oshawa as a prime location within Ontario’s indoor lacrosse community. The FireWolves will retain their name for the upcoming season, with plans for branding and community engagement initiatives to be revealed in the near future.
The FireWolves will become the second NLL team in the Greater Toronto Area, joining the Toronto Rock. Other Canadian teams in the league include the Calgary Roughnecks, Ottawa Black Bears, Halifax Thunderbirds, Vancouver Warriors, and Saskatchewan Rush.
In a statement on Instagram, the Albany FireWolves acknowledged the challenges that led to their relocation, expressing gratitude to their supporters. The team looks forward to starting a new chapter in Durham Region and sharing the Tribute Communities Centre with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League.
Oshawa boasts a rich lacrosse heritage, dating back to neighborhood leagues in 1872. The move of the FireWolves is expected to bring accessibility and inspiration to lacrosse enthusiasts in the region, building on the city’s legacy in the sport.
With the FireWolves’ arrival, fans can anticipate an enhanced lacrosse experience and increased participation in the sport across the area.
