Paramedic fired over criticism of Israel airstrikes

-

A paramedic from York Region claims she was dismissed following a social media post criticizing Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Katherine Grzejszczak expressed her belief that her comment aligned with her professional duty to advocate for ending suffering and preserving life. At a news briefing, she defended her stance, emphasizing that her criticism was directed at the actions of the Israeli government, not the people themselves.

The paramedic, also a member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Ontario’s executive board, was terminated on June 20 after condemning Israel’s airstrikes in Gaza and accusing the nation of harming Palestinian children and healthcare workers. Grzejszczak’s Facebook post on June 19 highlighted her concerns over Israel’s actions in various regions and its occupation of Palestine for over 75 years.

Following a complaint by Vaughan Coun. Gila Martow, York Region officials investigated the matter. The council contacted the Mayor, Steven Del Duca, who then engaged with the York Region chair to address community apprehensions. Subsequently, Grzejszczak was dismissed, prompting discussions on free speech rights and political influence in employment matters.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees initiated a grievance process on behalf of Grzejszczak to challenge her dismissal and seek reinstatement. However, York Region rejected the grievance, leading the union to pursue arbitration, a process that could extend over several years. Grzejszczak expressed her desire to uncover the extent of political intervention in her termination during the arbitration proceedings.

Addressing the situation, an employment lawyer emphasized that employers have the authority to discipline or terminate employees for breaching internal policies, including inappropriate social media conduct. York Region reiterated its commitment to public safety and inclusivity, underscoring the importance of upholding community welfare while fostering diversity and respect for all individuals.
