“PM Carney Optimistic Amidst UN Crisis, Sees Growth for Canada”

-

Prime Minister Mark Carney shared his optimism about Canada finding opportunities amidst crisis following his participation in the United Nations General Assembly in New York. During the assembly, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the UN’s purpose, emphasizing his “America First” policies. Carney expressed the belief that in times of disruption, there is room for growth and innovation, emphasizing Canada’s role in seizing these possibilities.

Carney reflected on Trump’s speech at the UN, where the president raised concerns about the institution’s effectiveness and criticized its operations. Despite Trump’s skepticism, he acknowledged the UN’s potential for promoting peace. Earlier this year, Trump initiated a review of the U.S.’ involvement in the UN, withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council, and halted U.S. funding to the organization.

Trump also addressed the assembly’s members, including Canada, regarding their support for recognizing a Palestinian state, which he viewed as rewarding Hamas for previous actions. While in New York, Carney did not have a direct meeting with Trump but attended a gathering for world leaders hosted by the president.

At a summit focused on global economic sustainability, Carney emphasized the importance of international finance in supporting emerging economies. He engaged with various leaders from different regions to enhance Canada’s trade diversification efforts, responding to Trump’s trade policies that have impacted global markets.

During his meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Carney highlighted the potential for strengthening Canada-China trade relations in sectors such as energy and agriculture. He emphasized the need to elevate the partnership between the two countries amidst evolving global dynamics, aiming to overcome past trade disputes and foster a more collaborative relationship with China.
