“PM Carney to Discuss Canola Tariffs with Saskatchewan Premier Moe”

-

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to hold discussions with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and leaders from the canola industry on Tuesday afternoon. Before that, he will lead a cabinet meeting in the morning, followed by the meeting with Moe and canola industry representatives in the afternoon. Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Heath MacDonald, Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu, Secretary of State for Rural Development Buckley Belanger, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister Kody Blois will also be present at the meeting.

Recently, Moe and Blois visited China to engage with Chinese officials responsible for the tariffs on Canadian canola. Currently, China has imposed a 76% tariff on Canadian canola seed in response to Canada’s 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles. Additionally, China has placed a 100% tariff on Canadian canola oil, meal, peas, as well as tariffs on pork, seafood products, retaliating against Canada’s 25% tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum.

These meetings come as Carney gears up for his upcoming trip to Mexico on Thursday to strengthen ties with a crucial trading partner. The official announcement of the trip was made on Tuesday by his office, confirming his meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to discuss various topics like security, infrastructure, investment, energy, and trade.

“I’m eager to engage in comprehensive discussions with the Mexican president. This presents a valuable opportunity to delve deep into a wide array of issues,” stated Carney as he entered the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
