Prime Minister Mark Carney has strongly criticized Israel’s recent attack on the headquarters of Hamas political leaders in Qatar. In a social media statement, Carney expressed Canada’s condemnation of the strikes, labeling them as an unacceptable escalation of violence and a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty.
Hamas reported that the attack resulted in the deaths of five of its members, who were meeting to discuss a ceasefire proposal for Gaza put forth by the U.S. Qatar, a key mediator between Israel and Hamas during the ongoing conflict, denounced the strike as a clear breach of international laws.
Carney highlighted that such actions by Israel jeopardize the prospects of a negotiated ceasefire in Gaza. He emphasized the significant risk these attacks pose in escalating tensions in the region, hindering peace efforts, compromising security, obstructing hostage release efforts, and obstructing the achievement of a lasting ceasefire.
