“Pressure Mounts for Legislation to Strip Prince Andrew’s Titles”

-

Calls are being made for Keir Starmer to push for a change in legislation to officially remove Prince Andrew’s titles. The Prince relinquished his Duke of York title, knighthood, and role as a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter last Friday amid growing controversy surrounding his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. However, he still holds the dukedom, which can only be revoked through an act of Parliament.

York Central MP Rachael Maskell has advocated for the creation of a process that would allow the monarch to strip honors, including peerages, emphasizing the need for accountability in such situations. Maskell, an independent MP, highlighted the importance of addressing associations with individuals like Epstein through legislative means to ensure justice for victims and survivors.

The current Titles Deprivation Act of 1917, originally aimed at stripping titles from individuals who collaborated with enemies during World War I, is considered outdated in this context. Maskell emphasized the role of Parliament in taking action, suggesting that discussions between the Palace and Parliament would be necessary to transfer powers and enforce necessary legislation.

Various political figures, including SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn and Plaid Cymru’s Liz Saville-Roberts, have expressed their support for holding royals accountable and removing privileges from those who abuse their positions. Despite pressure, Downing Street declined to comment on the need for legislation to strip Prince Andrew of his titles, stating it was a matter for the Palace and supporting the King’s judgment on the issue.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson acknowledged support for Prince Andrew’s decision to give up titles but clarified that the government does not have the authority to strip him of his royal status. She emphasized the importance of prioritizing the royal family’s guidance on such matters and the need to focus on wider legislative priorities while respecting the monarchy’s decisions regarding Prince Andrew’s titles.
