A high school basketball standout from Prince Edward Island is set to elevate her game and embark on a new chapter in her athletic journey as she prepares to transition to university next year.
Alex Newson has recently made the decision to further her studies at the State University of New York at Albany, where she will be a part of the Albany Great Danes basketball team. This move will mark a significant milestone for Newson as she is poised to become the first-ever basketball player from Prince Edward Island to compete in NCAA Division I basketball.
Expressing her excitement, Newson shared, “It’s great, honestly, I think it’s like, even better being from like a small province. I hope to inspire other people, especially girls that play basketball. I think it’s growing a lot in the province.”
Newson’s basketball journey began at the young age of five, laying the foundation for her passion and dedication to the sport. Prior to this latest development, she had already made a pivotal decision to relocate to Ontario before entering the 11th grade at King’s Christian Collegiate. This strategic move provided her the opportunity to play basketball year-round in a highly competitive league, setting the stage for her future endeavors.
Reflecting on her experiences, Newson highlighted the exposure to top-tier competition, including Division I and national team players, as well as the chance to showcase her skills in the United States for recruitment opportunities.
With her sights set on reaching new heights in her basketball career, Newson emphasized the unwavering support she has received from her parents. Their encouragement and guidance have been instrumental in her journey, culminating in her decision to commit to the University at Albany and pursue a degree in biology alongside her athletic pursuits.
Looking ahead, Newson anticipates commencing training at the university next summer, preparing for the challenges and opportunities that come with competing at the NCAA level. While she aims to make a positive impact as a freshman player and contribute to her team’s success, Newson remains open to the possibilities that lie ahead, including the potential for a professional basketball career with the guidance of her coaches.
As she prepares for this exciting new chapter, Newson remains grateful for the support system that has propelled her to this point, acknowledging the significance of this achievement not only for herself but for aspiring young athletes in her community.
