“Probe Launched into WestJet Cyberattack”

-

Canada’s privacy commissioner has initiated a probe into a cyberattack on WestJet, where a “malicious actor” managed to breach the airline’s systems. The airline disclosed last month that a sophisticated criminal entity accessed some personal and travel-related data in June. WestJet assured that the security of its airline operations remained unaffected throughout the incident.

A statement from the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Philippe Dufresne, highlighted that the investigation will focus on evaluating the security measures in place at WestJet during the breach and the adequacy of notifications sent to those impacted. The commissioner’s office is in communication with WestJet to ensure the company is taking necessary actions in response to the breach.

The primary objective of the investigation is to verify that WestJet is effectively managing the breach and safeguarding the personal information of its customers.
