“Reform UK Suspends 4 Councillors Over Party Disrepute”

-

Reform UK has taken action by suspending four of its councillors today, citing behavior that brought disrepute to the party. The decision follows the emergence of a leaked Zoom video capturing a tumultuous internal meeting of Kent council, during which members were reportedly instructed to “suck it up”. The recording, from an August meeting, revealed significant discord within Reform’s crucial council, described as a showcase for a potential Reform UK government at Westminster. Council leader Linden Kemkaran emphasized her collaborative approach but asserted her authority in making significant decisions such as local government reorganization.

The contentious meeting has drawn parallels to the viral Handforth Parish Council debacle during the pandemic, which propelled Jackie Weaver to internet fame. Following the incident, Reform UK announced the suspension of four Kent councillors, including Paul Thomas, who had clashed with Ms. Kemkaren during the meeting over leadership concerns. A party spokesman disclosed that Cllrs Paul Thomas, Oliver Bradshaw, Bill Barrett, and Maxine Fothergill had their whip suspended pending an investigation for conduct detrimental to the party’s reputation.

In response to the leaked video, Ms. Kemkaran vowed a thorough investigation, condemning the actions as cowardly and driven by personal agendas. Reform UK’s recent electoral success saw them seize control of Kent County Council by securing 57 out of 81 seats in the May local elections, marking a significant shift from a longstanding Tory majority.

A Labour spokesperson criticized Reform UK’s internal strife, characterizing it as emblematic of chaos and inefficiency, contrary to the promises of fiscal responsibility. Labour emphasized its commitment to delivering genuine change for residents and highlighted the alleged shortcomings of Reform UK in governance and stability. Labour MP Sojan Joseph expressed disappointment in Reform UK’s performance, labeling it as a failed experiment lacking substance and reliability, particularly as challenges like rising council tax and councillor suspensions emerge.
