“Renata Fast: Rising Star of Toronto Sceptres & Team Canada”

-

Five games into the previous season, the Toronto Sceptres faced a four-game losing streak. Recognizing the urgency of the 30-game PWHL season, team leaders Captain Blayre Turnbull and assistant captains Renata Fast and Jocelyne Larcoque held a private meeting with head coach Troy Ryan to discuss strategies for a turnaround.

Following the meeting, Fast, who later received a trade to Ottawa, reflected on the importance of stepping up as a leader. Her dedication and efforts paid off as she excelled during the season, tying for first in defender scoring with 22 points in 30 games. Fast led the league in hits, ice time, and power play effectiveness, earning her the PWHL’s defender of the year award and an MVP nomination alongside Hilary Knight and Marie-Philip Poulin.

Known for her exceptional skating ability, Fast’s transition to defense in Grade 11 was a pivotal moment in her career. Despite not initially aiming for a hockey career, her talent was recognized by Clarkson University’s coach, leading to her successful collegiate experience and subsequent national team selection.

Fast’s commitment to improvement and versatility on the ice have made her a key player for Team Canada. With her relentless drive and coachable nature, she continues to evolve as a top athlete. Embracing challenges and seeking guidance from mentors like Larocque and Ryan, Fast aims to further enhance her game, especially in offensive contributions.

Looking ahead, Fast remains focused on her upcoming season with the Sceptres, where she anticipates teaming up with new defensive partner Ella Shelton. As she strives for success on the ice, including a shot at the Walter Cup, Fast also eyes the opportunity to win an Olympic gold medal with her family present, a moment she missed during the 2022 Games.

Fast’s dedication, skill set, and unwavering pursuit of excellence position her as a standout player poised to make significant contributions to Team Canada’s pursuit of continued success on the international stage.
