Rodeo Clown Legend “Ricky Ticky” Retires from Canadian Circuit

-

Rick Wanchuk, famously known as Ricky Ticky, has been a prominent figure in small-town rodeo circles for numerous fans across Canada, from British Columbia to Manitoba and various points in between. After nearly fifty years in the rodeo scene, Wanchuk bid farewell to his iconic yellow shirt and oversized Wrangler jeans this summer, officially retiring as a rodeo clown.

In an interview with CBC News, Wanchuk explained that while his mind was eager to continue, his body was not able to keep up with the demands of the job, prompting his retirement at the age of almost 74. Throughout his career, Wanchuk became a fixture at events like the Grande Prairie Stompede, Lea Park Pro Rodeo, and numerous rodeos in Saskatchewan. He even entertained audiences at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton on five occasions and showcased his talents overseas in Australia in 1992.

Despite his larger performances, Wanchuk always treasured his appearances at smaller rodeos. His final show took place at the Lakeland Rodeo Association Finals in St. Paul, Alta., on August 31. Unlike many performers who venture to the U.S., Wanchuk, a proud Canadian, never felt inclined to tour south of the border due to the challenges of transporting his unique props and animals.

While Wanchuk has retired, the legacy of the Wanchuk family in rodeo continues with the next generation. His sons, Kolby and Kyle, known as Halfchuk and Quarterchuk, respectively, are making their mark in bronc riding and roping events. Additionally, Rick’s nephew, Casey Wanchuk, who has been assisting on the circuit for the past seven years, is now poised to take the spotlight.

In an interview with CBC News, Casey expressed his admiration for his uncle and father, who inspired his love for clowning and performing. He aims to bring his own style and flair to his shows while upholding the family tradition. As Rick looks forward to retirement, he plans to reconnect with old friends and fellow rodeo enthusiasts, cherishing the opportunity to share smiles and stories with familiar faces at rodeo events in the future.
