Russia Cracks Down on Apple’s FaceTime & Roblox

-

Russia has recently hindered the functionality of Apple’s video-calling app, FaceTime, as reported by the state communications watchdog. This action comes shortly after the blocking of the U.S. children’s gaming platform Roblox. The restrictions on these platforms are part of a broader crackdown on foreign tech services. Russian authorities claim that FaceTime is being misused for criminal activities, while Roblox has been accused of disseminating extremist materials and “LGBT propaganda.”

This move follows previous limitations imposed on Google’s YouTube, Meta’s WhatsApp, and the Telegram messaging service. Critics argue that these restrictions represent censorship and a tightening of government control over private communications. However, Russian authorities maintain that these measures are necessary law enforcement actions. Notably, Russia introduced a state-supported alternative app called Max, which some critics fear could be utilized for surveillance purposes, a claim dismissed by state media as unfounded.

In defense of its decision, the communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, stated that FaceTime is allegedly being used to orchestrate terrorist attacks, recruit individuals for criminal activities, and perpetrate fraud against Russian citizens. However, the watchdog did not provide specific evidence to support these allegations.

Apple has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the blocking of FaceTime, a popular app for making free video and audio calls over Wi-Fi or cellular data. Residents of Moscow attempting to use FaceTime received an on-screen message indicating that the “User is unavailable.” Recent months have seen an escalation in efforts by Roskomnadzor to block Western media and tech platforms accused of violating Russian laws.

In a separate action, Roskomnadzor also banned access to the children’s gaming platform Roblox, citing concerns over the distribution of extremist content and “LGBT propaganda.” A spokesperson for Roblox emphasized the platform’s commitment to complying with local regulations and providing a safe environment for learning and creativity. Roblox has faced bans in multiple countries due to worries about child exploitation on the platform.

In 2023, Russia labeled the “international LGBT movement” as extremist, leading to severe legal consequences for LGBTQ+ individuals and their supporters. These actions reflect the ongoing efforts by Russian authorities to regulate online content and communication platforms.
