Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina progressed to the semifinals of the National Bank Open as Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk retired due to an arm injury while trailing 6-1, 2-1 in the women’s singles match in Montreal on Monday. Rybakina, seeded ninth, capitalized on three out of her ten breakpoint opportunities during the quarterfinal clash at IGA Stadium. Following the third game, Kostyuk’s arm was wrapped in medical tape. The match concluded with a handshake between the players, after which the 24th-seeded Kostyuk left the court in tears.
Rybakina is set to face the winner of the match between Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain on Monday night. Mboko caused an upset by defeating top-seeded Coco Gauff of the United States in straight sets on Saturday, finishing the match in just 62 minutes. The 18-year-old from Toronto has made significant strides in the world rankings, climbing from outside the top 300 to No. 85 in a breakthrough year.
The National Bank Open, a WTA 1000-level competition, will continue until the final on Thursday. Notably, the tournament’s top five seeds were eliminated before reaching the quarterfinal stage.
