“Scotland Residents Urged to Check Eligibility for Winter Heating Aid”

-

Residents in Scotland are encouraged to verify their eligibility for a financial aid package to assist with increased energy expenses during the colder months.

Last year, around 500,000 households received a total of £27.3 million in Winter Heating Payments.

The Winter Heating Payment, amounting to £59.75 and disbursed in December, aims to alleviate the burden of escalating energy bills. This payment, provided by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), supersedes the previous £25 Cold Weather Payment.

In contrast to the former payment, the new scheme does not hinge on prolonged cold spells in specific areas but is an annual lump sum distributed irrespective of weather conditions.

Many eligible households will automatically receive the payment, particularly those on low-income benefits, including families with young children, individuals with disabilities, and senior citizens.

Information on MYGOV.SCOT outlines that the payment will be automatically processed between December and February, as reported by the Daily Record.

Recipients will be notified via letter or email regarding the impending payment, which will be labeled as ‘WHP’ (Winter Heating Payment) on bank statements.

Individuals qualifying for other benefits will also receive the Winter Heating Payment automatically. The specific qualifying week for this year is yet to be confirmed but is anticipated to be the initial full week of November, similar to the previous year (November 3 to 9).

Eligibility criteria include being employed or self-employed with a child or young person disability element or being unemployed without specific requirements other than qualifying for Pension Credit.

Additionally, qualification is granted to those with a child under 5 or meeting other stipulated conditions.

Pensioners in England and Wales are set to receive Winter Fuel Payments ranging from £100 to £300, distributed by the DWP during November and December.

Scotland’s Social Security agency will issue Pension Age Winter Heating Payments based on data shared by the DWP, with comprehensive details now available on MYGOV.SCOT.

Payments will commence automatically from November, with the amount varying depending on factors such as age, household composition, and UK residency during the qualifying week of September 15 to September 21, 2025.
