A small plane carrying three individuals crashed just west of Ottawa’s airport on Thursday evening, near Riverside Drive and West Hunt Club Road. Emergency services arrived at the scene around 5:55 p.m., rescuing a man and a woman from the aircraft. Both were taken to the hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, while the condition of the third person on board remains unconfirmed.
The Transportation Safety Board Canada (TSB) dispatched two investigators to the crash site, identifying the aircraft as a privately-registered Grumman AA-5A. Despite the incident, operations at the Ottawa International Airport continued uninterrupted.
Witnesses in the area, like Greg Carter, described hearing a loud crash and seeing the plane entangled in power lines after the impact. The lines were live at the time, prompting Hydro Ottawa to cut the power before the rescue operation. Another resident, Pablo Coles, observed the plane flying at a low altitude before the crash and alerted emergency services upon hearing the impact.
Efforts were made to contain fuel spillage from the crash site into a nearby creek. Ottawa Fire Services utilized foam to minimize environmental impact. Residents expressed sadness for those involved in the incident, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
