Labour leader Keir Starmer has criticized President Donald Trump’s recent disparaging remarks about London Mayor Sadiq Khan, calling them “absurd.” Trump made unfounded accusations that London officials aim to implement Sharia law, which Mayor Khan refuted, labeling Trump’s comments as “racist” and “Islamophobic.”
When questioned by ITV London about the President’s statements, Starmer defended Mayor Khan, describing him as a “decent individual.” Trump’s verbal attack on Khan occurred at the UN General Assembly following Trump’s recent state visit to the UK.
Starmer stated, “While there are areas where the President and I share common ground and collaborate, there are also points of disagreement. The notion of Sharia law being introduced is baseless. Sadiq Khan is an effective leader who is actively combating serious criminal activities.”
Regarding Khan’s assessment of Trump as sexist, racist, and Islamophobic, Starmer declined to engage in verbal sparring. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between the US and the UK while expressing pride in London and its Mayor’s accomplishments.
During his address, Trump criticized London’s Mayor, suggesting significant changes had occurred. In response, Khan highlighted Trump’s fixation on him, stating, “It seems President Trump is preoccupied with a Muslim mayor leading a diverse, progressive, and successful city.”
Khan concluded, “President Trump’s behavior demonstrates racism, sexism, misogyny, and Islamophobia.”
