Aether Rocero recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing the purported incident at the Lapu-Lapu Day festival, which resulted in 11 fatalities and numerous injuries, as “frightening.”
The now-graduated 17-year-old was among the many students from John Oliver Secondary School in Vancouver impacted by the tragic event that occurred on April 26, where a vehicle plowed into a crowd at the Filipino street festival near the school’s location on East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street.
Despite the trauma, community members highlight how students have found solace through connection and artistic expression. This upcoming autumn, students will collaborate on a mural project to adorn the walls of the school’s basketball and tennis courts overlooking East 43rd Avenue.
Reflecting on the aftermath of volunteering at the Lapu-Lapu Day festival, Rocero expressed the somber atmosphere upon returning to school the following week. He emphasized the therapeutic nature of painting as a means to convey emotions and honor the community’s resilience.
Local artist Mar Cortez, who had been working with the students before the tragedy, provided a space for them to engage in painting sessions as a form of healing. Spearheading the school’s mural initiative, Cortez plans to incorporate elements symbolizing Filipino culture and unity, aiming to commemorate the affected individuals while promoting progress.
Amidst the grieving process, Cortez stressed the importance of acknowledging emotions and moving forward positively. The students at John Oliver Secondary School have embarked on various initiatives such as run clubs, friendship activities, charity drives, and mental health support programs, symbolizing their resilience and determination to thrive.
Supported by community organizations and grants designated for those impacted by the incident, the students have shown remarkable strength and optimism about their future endeavors. Rocero, involved in the mural project, envisions it as a tribute to the Fraser Street community and Filipino heritage, symbolizing hope and perseverance in the face of adversity.
