Three individuals, comprising two men and a woman, have been apprehended in Essex under suspicion of espionage for Russia. The Metropolitan Police disclosed that the trio, consisting of a 41-year-old man, a 46-year-old man, and a 35-year-old woman, were seized at different locations in Grays on allegations of aiding a foreign intelligence agency. They were subsequently transported to a London police station. Commander Dominic Murphy, overseeing the Counter Terrorism Command, highlighted an upsurge in the recruitment of ‘proxies’ by foreign intelligence services in recent national security cases. He cited a case involving two young British men awaiting sentencing for an arson attack on a Ukrainian-linked warehouse orchestrated by the Wagner Group, affiliated with the Russian state. Murphy emphasized the distinct nature of the current arrests from the mentioned investigation. He cautioned individuals against engaging in criminal activities on behalf of foreign nations within the UK, emphasizing the severe repercussions and legal consequences. The trio has been released on bail pending further investigation. Scotland Yard declined to disclose the nationalities of the detained individuals.
