A toddler has tragically died after suffering from “serious head injuries” – prompting a desperate appeal for information from the police.
Emergency services raced to the Houghton-le-Spring area in Sunderland on Easter Monday, after they were called to a “report of concern” at around 11pm. Sadly, despite being taken to hospital she passed away on Thursday.
Northumbria Police confirmed that the investigation is still in its early stages. The child’s next of kin has been informed. The force is urging anyone with information to come forward.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 11pm on Monday, April 21, we received a report of concern for a child in the Houghton-le-Spring area. A two-year-old girl was taken to hospital for treatment of serious head injuries and tragically died on Thursday, April 24.
“Her next of kin are being supported by specially-trained officers at this time. The investigation is at a very early stage, and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.
