Donald Trump is currently maintaining a low profile, with no public events scheduled for today. Apart from a few posts on Truth Social, he has refrained from making spontaneous public statements for several days. Later, he is set to travel to Florida for the weekend. This comes after Congress released a large number of Jeffrey Epstein’s emails and passed a petition for further releases, which has seemingly affected Trump. Interestingly, Trump has not been vocal about his dispute with the BBC regarding the allegedly misleadingly edited Panorama footage. Although the BBC issued an apology to Trump, it appears unlikely that damages will be paid.
In another development, a top Trump aide, Tom Homan, expressed doubts about the United Kingdom’s friendship with the United States and the President. Homan made these comments outside the White House, mentioning the UK’s cessation of intelligence-sharing on boats in the Caribbean Sea due to concerns about the legality of recent strikes against suspected Venezuelan drug boats. Despite acknowledging that the issue was not within his direct responsibility, Homan stated his skepticism about the UK’s allegiance to the country and the President.
Regarding the Epstein email disclosure, Trump’s reactions have primarily been through alarmed posts on Truth Social, accusing Democrats of using the situation to divert attention from the impending end of the Shutdown. He notably cut short an Oval Office session without taking questions after the emails were first made public. Furthermore, he avoided press inquiries by holding an Executive Order signing in the East Room instead of the Oval Office. Trump has now escalated the situation by announcing his intention to instruct the Attorney General and FBI to investigate individuals named in the files, including Bill Clinton.
Behind the scenes, efforts are underway to prevent further file releases, with reports of Trump personally contacting Republican House members to dissuade them from supporting the petition. The situation remains uncertain as the petition may pass the House vote but still requires Senate approval and the President’s signature. Failure to act may lead to accusations of a cover-up and spark more inquiries into the contents of the files.
In a separate development, prompted by the Pope, senior Catholic bishops in the US released a video denouncing Trump’s ICE immigration raids as “inhumane.” They called for an end to mass deportations and the cessation of dehumanizing rhetoric targeted at immigrants and law enforcement.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom’s stance on climate change as a “fallacy” on Fox News, attributing increased energy costs and state exodus to his policies. Contrary to her claims, the scientific community widely disagrees with her position.
