A man has been arrested after being spotted inside Trump Tower.
Authorities received reports of a man behaving disorderly on an “elevated surface” – thought to lead to the roof of the skyscraper – and so police swarmed the building in Manhattan, New York City. Donald Trump keeps a penthouse at the property, which also houses private condominiums, restaurants, shops, and a soaring public atrium that is open to tourists.
But it is thought the 30-year-old man had attempted to access a private area and so police evacuated people from the atrium. Journalists at the scene posted video of security officials leading a massive operation, and police wearing helmets and safety harnesses as they detained the man.
New York City Police said the force received calls of the suspicious behaviour at 4.30pm local time (9.30pm UK time), and sent its emergency response unit to the scene.
It is not immediately clear what charges the person might face. The investigation, though, continues as a motivate remains either unidentified or undisclosed.
The 58-story, 663-foot-tall skyscraper opened in February 1983. However, Trump Tower has been the scene, over the years, of protests, bomb scares and the occasional stunt. A person tried to scale the building in 2016 and got to the 21st floor before officers dragged him in.
And on January 1 this year, a high-profile security scare saw a Tesla Cybertruck explode outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, which lead to heightened security measures in New York, particularly around Trump Tower.
A person was killed in the Las Vegas blast, which Elon Musk said was either caused by fireworks – or a bomb. Videos taken on New Year’s Day by locals nearby the 64 floor complex reported police and fire rushing to the scene, which boasts it has the most “exceptional views” of the strip. Video from the scene showed a Tesla Cybertruck aflame outside the doors of the hotel car fire outside the luxury hotel, and Las Vegas Police confirmed a person was killed inside the vehicle, which had exploded.
Fire crews worked to remove the body from the car. At least seven other people were injured in the accident, which police were unable to explain. Elon Musk however took to X and ruled out it being a vehicle failure. Speaking at the time, he said: “We have now confirmed the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself.”
Jeremy Schwartz, acting FBI Special Agent in Charge for the Las Vegas office, had earlier added at a lengthy news conference: “I know you have a lot of questions. We don’t have a lot of answers.”
