Following a 7.8-magnitude earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, the potential tsunami threat to British Columbia is under assessment. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center is currently evaluating the level of risk for coastal areas of B.C. The B.C. Ministry of Emergency Management has issued a tsunami advisory for the Aleutian Islands and Amchitka Pass near Alaska.
According to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning System, regions closer to the earthquake’s epicenter in the Pacific may face a threat, but it is too premature to determine if Hawaii is at risk. The earthquake occurred at 11:58 a.m. PT, coincidentally about seven weeks after a significant 8.8-magnitude quake in the same region off Russia, prompting a tsunami advisory for much of the B.C. coast.
