UK to Recognize Statehood of Palestine, Starmer Declares

-

Keir Starmer is set to declare that the United Kingdom will officially recognize the statehood of Palestine today. The Prime Minister is anticipated to make this announcement on Sunday, following his commitment made back in July if the conditions in Gaza did not improve.

Sources suggest that Downing Street has come to the conclusion that the situation has significantly deteriorated, with distressing images of violence, starvation, and suffering becoming unbearable. The formal recognition to the United Nations is expected to be conveyed by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy on Monday.

In a previous statement in July, Mr. Starmer had demanded that Hamas release all hostages immediately, agree to a ceasefire, disarm, and acknowledge that it will not be involved in the governance of Gaza. These demands are reported to remain unchanged.

There were reports earlier this week indicating that the announcement was delayed until after Donald Trump’s state visit, a claim denied by Mr. Starmer during a press conference at Chequers on Thursday. Responding to concerns about rewarding Hamas, Mr. Starmer firmly stated that Hamas, being a terrorist organization, has no place in the future leadership of Palestine.

He emphasized the need for a two-state solution, peace, and a ceasefire, stating his clear stance against Hamas. Mr. Starmer clarified that the timing of the recognition decision was not influenced by the state visit and that he had discussed it with the president.
