Two wildfires in New Brunswick are still uncontained on Tuesday, as per the provincial fire dashboard. The Oldfield Road fire near Miramichi has expanded from 450 hectares on Monday to around 1,120 hectares on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Irishtown fire, also known as the 115 Pit fire near Moncton, has decreased in size from 54 hectares to about 45 hectares.
No buildings have been reported destroyed by either fire at this time. Andrew Noble, visiting Shediac Cape, mentioned witnessing water bombers refilling in the bay, highlighting the intense firefighting efforts. The Department of Natural Resources has 14 air tankers and three helicopters available in New Brunswick. Assistance from firefighters from Prince Edward Island, Maine, and Nova Scotia has also been deployed.
While several other wildfires in the province are now under control, the fire risk in New Brunswick remains high. Activities that could potentially start fires are restricted, and Crown land has been closed for camping, hiking, and off-road vehicle use. Route closures and evacuation advisories are in place, with residents in certain areas asked to be ready to evacuate at short notice.
A burn ban is in effect province-wide, and residents are urged to conserve water due to the ongoing heatwave. The Emergency Measures Organization has set up comfort centers across the province to provide relief from the extreme heat.
