“Flight Reductions Hit 40 Major U.S. Airports Amid Shutdown Strain”

-

Starting Friday, flights at 40 major airports across the U.S., including those in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, will be reduced due to the ongoing government shutdown. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a 10% reduction in air traffic across 40 high-volume markets to ensure travel safety amid strain on air traffic controllers.

The impacted airports include major hubs like Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, Orlando, Miami, and San Francisco, with multiple airports affected in cities such as New York, Houston, and Chicago. The FAA is implementing these flight cuts to alleviate pressure on unpaid air traffic controllers during the shutdown, who have been increasingly absent from work.

Controllers have already missed one paycheck and are facing financial strain as the shutdown continues. Airlines, like United, are planning to minimize disruptions for travelers, focusing cuts on smaller regional routes. Passengers will be informed of cancellations starting Thursday, and airlines are offering refunds to affected travelers.

Experts estimate that up to 1,800 flights and 268,000 seats may be impacted by the reductions. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford expressed the unprecedented nature of these measures due to the shutdown’s prolonged duration.

Which Airports Are Affected?

Air traffic controllers have been working without pay since the shutdown commenced on October 1. The FAA is taking action to address staffing challenges, with plans to meet with airlines before implementing traffic reductions.

Major airlines, aviation unions, and the travel industry are urging an end to the shutdown, which has become the longest in history. Airlines are working to minimize disruptions for travelers while complying with the FAA’s directives.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the need to proactively manage the situation to prevent potential chaos in the skies. The FAA and DOT have yet to provide specific details on the impacted airports, but a list of affected airports has been reported.

Ensuring Travel Continuity

Despite the challenges posed by the shutdown, airlines are striving to maintain operational integrity and provide options for affected passengers. Both the FAA and airlines are monitoring the situation closely to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel during this period of uncertainty.
