Top Conservative politician Chris Philp struggled repeatedly to recall the leader of his party in Wales during a challenging television interview. The Shadow Home Secretary faced difficulty when questioned by GB News presenter Chris Hope. After evading the inquiry several times, Philp eventually admitted, “We’ve got a relatively new leader and I’m afraid the name escapes me.”
Hope informed Philp that the leader is Darren Millar, emphasizing the significance as the Welsh Conservative Party’s influence appears to be diminishing. He criticized Philp for allegedly neglecting Wales and focusing on England. Philp defended his party’s approach, stating that their policies, such as welfare savings, stamp duty cuts, illegal immigration prevention, and police recruitment, are designed for the entire country.
Darren Millar assumed leadership of the Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd following Andrew RT Davies’ resignation last December amid party direction criticism. The Tories’ recent by-election performance in Caerphilly saw them securing only 2% of the vote, trailing behind Plaid Cymru, Reform, and Labour.
Philp faced backlash for his response to Reform MP Sarah Pochin’s controversial comments about race in advertisements. Initially avoiding labeling her remarks as racist, Philp later denounced her comments as racist during an interview with LBC. He condemned Pochin’s statements, asserting that her apology was necessary and acknowledging the racist nature of her remarks.
