Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s recent criticism of RCMP leadership has caused some party members to reconsider their support for him. Several Conservative caucus members, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed concerns that Poilievre has not adjusted his messaging since the last election campaign and does not embody the qualities expected of a potential prime minister.
In discussions with Radio-Canada, a total of 10 Conservative insiders, including seven caucus members, shared their views. Four sources admitted uncertainty about backing Poilievre in an upcoming confidence vote, despite supporting him in the past. One source criticized Poilievre’s comments, labeling them as “completely irresponsible” for suggesting that a former prime minister should be imprisoned.
During a recent appearance on the YouTube channel Northern Perspective, Poilievre accused former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of illegal actions related to the Aga Khan vacation scandal and the SNC-Lavalin affair. He alleged that the RCMP had concealed these incidents and criticized the force’s leadership for failing to uphold laws against the Liberal government.
Critics believe that Poilievre’s remarks have damaged his chances of becoming prime minister. Some Conservative MPs feel that Poilievre remains fixated on Trudeau and struggles to move past his electoral defeat. These concerns will be addressed at an upcoming caucus meeting on Parliament Hill.
Despite the backlash, Poilievre still maintains significant support within the party. Pierre Paul-Hus, Poilievre’s Quebec lieutenant, expressed confidence in his leader, emphasizing his value to the country. Paul-Hus clarified that the criticisms were primarily directed at former RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, whom he accused of making numerous errors and following political directives.
In a statement released by Poilievre, he reiterated that his comments targeted Lucki’s track record of scandals and political interference benefiting the Liberal government. While some view Poilievre’s podcast remarks as a misstep, others believe it is not a significant issue. A source close to Poilievre praised his unconventional political style, attributing the party’s recent electoral success to his authenticity.
