Sky Q, a highly acclaimed set-top box, is recognized as a top-tier device in its category. It has garnered praise for its feature set, including live TV recording, access to premium channels, on-demand content, and popular streaming apps like Disney+ and Netflix. Despite its widespread popularity, Sky seems to be shifting focus away from its traditional satellite-based platform towards internet-driven products such as the Sky Stream box and Sky Glass TV. This move could pave the way for a new competitor to enter the market for enthusiasts of physical recordings.
Humax has unveiled the Aura EZ 4K TV Recorder, a new device that shares many similarities with Sky Q. Like its counterpart, this set-top box boasts a built-in 2TB hard drive capable of storing extensive hours of TV shows, movies, and sports. The inclusion of internal storage in a time when physical recording options are dwindling makes this launch noteworthy.
Moreover, the Aura EZ is powered by Freely, offering the ability to watch live TV over broadband. Developed by the Freeview team, Freely provides access to over 60 live channels and a vast library of on-demand programs. This setup allows for easy relocation of the box between rooms, straightforward installation, and regular feature enhancements.
Notable features of the Aura EZ include 4K HDR picture quality, Dolby Digital Plus audio, and an integrated TV guide displaying current and upcoming programs. Users can conveniently manage the box remotely via the Humax Aura EZ smartphone app, enabling schedule browsing and recording management from any location.
While Freely may not match Sky’s premium sports and movie offerings, it is a cost-free service without any subscription fees.
The Humax Aura EZ is scheduled for release in the UK in February 2026, priced at £249.
In a related development, Sky has introduced a new subscription bundle that combines various major streaming services at a reduced monthly cost. For £24 per month, customers gain access to Disney+, Netflix, Hayu, and the upcoming HBO Max.
Sky touts the bundle as a value-packed offering, consolidating multiple streaming platforms under one subscription. Subscribers to the Ultimate TV plan will also enjoy access to over 130 premium channels, including Sky Comedy, Sky Documentaries, Sky Crime, and Sky History.
Additionally, Sky Cinema customers will benefit from a new Disney movie channel integrated directly into the TV guide.
The £24 bundle comprises:
– Netflix Standard with Ads
– Disney+ Standard with Ads (starting in March)
– HBO Max Basic with Ads (from March 26)
– Hayu (available from July, with select content accessible from March)
– Over 130 Sky channels
