Organizers of Your Party aimed to move past contentious disputes.
During the inaugural conference, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn made a plea for harmony. Addressing over 2,000 delegates, he stressed the importance of unity. Despite rumors of disruption, only one heckler was barely audible, and there was no stage intrusion at the event. The party has faced internal conflicts since its inception, with issues ranging from donation controversies to the departure of two independent MPs, Adnan Hussain and Iqbal Mohamed, which have inadvertently benefited the Greens.
Returning to the same stage where he last appeared as Labour leader in 2018 at the Liverpool ACC arena, Mr. Corbyn cautioned against division and emphasized the need for solidarity. He emphasized the party’s mission to advocate for real socialism and social justice, urging attendees to seize the moment and work towards a better society.
However, the conference faced turmoil when former Labour MP Zarah Sultana, a key figure in the party’s establishment, criticized the pre-conference expulsions. She expressed disappointment over the exclusions and emphasized a commitment to inclusivity, rejecting a culture of witch hunts. Supporters gathered around her, expressing solidarity while also voicing their discontent with both Corbyn and Sultana.
Following a brief appearance outside the conference venue, Sultana chose not to enter, citing the recent expulsions as a reason. She advocated for a party that welcomes all socialists and condemned what she referred to as a witch hunt. The situation caused confusion among attendees, but Sultana later clarified her stance and decided to participate in the conference the next day.
In her keynote address the following day, Sultana acknowledged flaws in the party’s founding process and apologized for any shortcomings. Despite criticisms from undisclosed high-ranking members within the party regarding the expulsions, she celebrated the members’ decision to opt for a leadership structure led by a committee of ordinary members until 2027, rejecting the single leadership model favored by Corbyn.
Concluding the conference, Corbyn announced the party’s official name based on members’ votes, revealing “Your Party” as the chosen name. He stressed the importance of unity and collaboration as the party navigates a new leadership model, emphasizing the significant impact of their actions on people across the country.
As the party charts its course with a unique leadership approach, the call for unity remains crucial for the delegates. The implementation of new strategies and decisions will determine the party’s trajectory and influence on the nation.
