Disney has announced a significant investment of $1 billion in OpenAI, paving the way for the startup to utilize iconic characters from Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel franchises in its Sora AI video and image generator. This partnership marks a pivotal moment in Hollywood’s adoption of generative artificial intelligence technologies, despite lingering concerns within the industry regarding the potential impact on creative roles and intellectual property rights.
Under the terms of the agreement unveiled on Thursday, Sora and ChatGPT Images are poised to commence producing fan-requested videos featuring licensed Disney characters by early 2026. Leveraging OpenAI’s cutting-edge models, the collaboration aims to develop innovative products, tools, and personalized experiences for Disney+ subscribers.
This strategic alliance follows criticism from Creative Artists Agency, a prominent talent agency representing numerous industry professionals, who expressed apprehensions about the risks associated with OpenAI’s technology. Notably, the partnership will enable selected user-generated videos to be streamed on the Disney+ platform, while also integrating ChatGPT for internal use by Disney employees.
Moreover, the collaboration will extend to image generation capabilities on ChatGPT, tapping into Disney’s extensive intellectual property portfolio to fuel creative content generation.
