The crash resulted in the deaths of two individuals shortly after takeoff, narrowly avoiding nearby homes. Although no houses sustained damage, debris was discovered near a retention pond where the plane went down. A local resident, Kenneth DeTrolio, described how the aircraft crashed through his backyard, damaging property and spilling fuel. The strong odor of fuel lingered inside his home for hours following the incident. Federal Aviation Administration records indicate the plane’s manufacture date as 1976. The investigation into the cause of the crash will be handled by federal aviation authorities. The aircraft was registered to International Air Services, a company specializing in trust agreements for non-U.S. citizens registering aircraft with the FAA. Flight tracking data revealed the plane had recently made multiple trips between the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and Fort Lauderdale.
Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall in late October as a Category 5 storm, caused widespread destruction in Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Recovery efforts are ongoing in the affected regions as relief organizations mobilize to provide aid.
