Tropical Storm Melissa Strengthens, Threatens Jamaica

-

Tropical Storm Melissa continues to strengthen as the weekend approaches. Concerns have risen that Melissa could evolve into one of the most powerful hurricanes Jamaica has ever faced. Initially developing in the southern Caribbean Sea on Tuesday, October 21, Melissa is now moving towards Jamaica, with potential catastrophic consequences.

Renowned tropical cyclone analyst and hurricane historian, Michael Ferragamo, expressed his apprehensions on a social media platform, cautioning about the potential impact of Melissa on Jamaica. Ferragamo warned about a prolonged period of rain, strong winds, and surges that could make it the most impactful event on the island in years.

Comparing the situation to the infamous Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, which had devastating winds of 115 knots (130 mph), Ferragamo highlighted the historical significance of such a formidable storm hitting Jamaica. Hurricane Gilbert had a profound impact on the nation, causing significant damage and loss of life.

In a grim reminder of past tragedies, officials are urging citizens to stay alert and make necessary preparations as Melissa approaches. The Minister of Health and Wellness in Jamaica, Christopher Tufton, confirmed that public hospitals are entering emergency mode to handle potential casualties, with non-urgent medical procedures being postponed to free up resources.

As the country braces for the impending storm, Daryl Vaz, Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications, and Transport, indicated that airports may close within 24 hours of a hurricane warning being issued for safety reasons.

Experts are warning residents across various Caribbean nations, including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica, to prepare for severe weather conditions such as heavy rainfall, flash floods, power outages, and infrastructure damage. The impact of Tropical Storm Melissa could be catastrophic, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate risks and ensure public safety.
