A recent incident aboard Air Canada Flight AC33 shed light on the increasing severity of clear-air turbulence, a phenomenon linked to climate change. The flight, carrying individuals like Luke Wheeldon and Linda Woodhouse, encountered unexpected turbulence, causing injuries and chaos on board.

The turbulence lasted only seconds but resulted in 37 injuries, highlighting the potential dangers posed by clear-air turbulence. Researchers, such as Paul Williams from the University of Reading, have connected the rise in clear-air turbulence to climate change-induced temperature patterns in the upper atmosphere.

Williams emphasized the challenges in predicting clear-air turbulence due to its invisible nature, making it difficult for pilots to avoid. However, advancements in forecasting algorithms have improved, offering better insights into turbulence patterns. Despite these advances, the forecast predicts a doubling of severe clear-air turbulence over various regions if emissions are not reduced.

To mitigate the impact of turbulence, researchers like Aimy Wissa from Princeton University are exploring nature-inspired solutions. Wissa’s team studied bird feathers to enhance airplane stability in adverse flying conditions. By mimicking the structure of bird feathers with small flaps on a remote-controlled plane, they found promising results in preventing stalls and enhancing flight stability.

Ultimately, the ongoing research aims to enhance aircraft safety and mitigate the risks associated with clear-air turbulence. Flyers are advised to keep their seatbelts fastened at all times, as it significantly reduces the risk of injuries during turbulent episodes.
