A group of lynx was captured on video crossing a road in northwestern Ontario on New Year’s Day, creating a viral social media moment. Constable Zack Stubbington from the Armstrong OPP spotted an adult lynx leading three kittens across the road while on patrol. The video shows a total of five lynx in the group, prompting Stubbington to express amazement at the sight.
The video was shared widely on social media, attracting attention to the unique wildlife encounter. Lynx populations in Canada experience cyclical fluctuations every 10 years, influenced by food availability. Brian McLaren, an associate professor at Lakehead University, explained that abundant food leads to higher lynx populations and more frequent sightings.
Lynx kittens typically stay with their mothers for around 10 months, making it uncommon to spot a second adult with a family group. McLaren speculated that the fifth lynx in the video could be a female from a previous litter, as male lynx are known to be solitary creatures. Stubbington, in an interview with CBC News, highlighted his passion for wildlife sightings and the outdoors, emphasizing the appeal of a career in northern Ontario for nature enthusiasts.
