Canadian hip-hop icon Michie Mee is thrilled about the opportunity to be featured on an official postage stamp by Canada Post. She expressed her excitement after receiving the news from Canada Post, describing the moment as one of disbelief and overwhelming joy. Michie Mee, known as the godmother of Canadian rap, will be part of a series of three stamps honoring Canadian hip-hop pioneers for Black History Month in February, alongside Maestro Fresh Wes and Muzion.
Canada Post highlighted the contributions of these artists to shaping the hip-hop and rap genre in Canada. Michie Mee, originally from Jamaica and raised in Toronto, was recognized for incorporating Jamaican patois into her rhymes. Maestro Fresh Wes, the first Canadian MC to achieve mainstream success with his hit single “Let Your Backbone Slide” in 1989, and Muzion, known for blending French, English, and Haitian Creole in their music, were also acknowledged.
The upcoming stamps mark the first time Canada Post is dedicating stamps to celebrate hip-hop artists for Black History Month. Michie Mee, whose real name is Michelle Ann Camille McCullock, reflected on her journey as a trailblazer in the Canadian hip-hop scene, emphasizing the challenges faced by artists in the ’80s and ’90s due to lack of recognition and support. Despite the obstacles, she and her peers persevered, shaping a vibrant hip-hop community in Canada.
The unveiling of the hip-hop stamps is set for a private event at The Concert Hall in Toronto on Jan. 27, with public availability in February. Michie Mee expressed gratitude for the honor and her journey in the music industry, advising aspiring Canadian artists to stay focused, believe in themselves, and enjoy the process. She looks forward to the stamp representing her legacy, embracing every part of her identity with gratitude and pride.
