Many Canadians recently received text messages regarding a class action lawsuit against Rogers, Fido, and Chatr due to the April 19, 2021 outage. The lawsuit has been authorized by a Quebec court to proceed. The lead attorney, David Assor, stated that damages were suffered by many Canadians during the outage, impacting access to essential services like 9-1-1 and causing income loss for individuals such as delivery drivers who rely on their phones for work.
Rogers has already compensated affected customers for the service outage day and expressed readiness to defend the case. Individuals who received the text messages do not need to take any immediate action. The messages contain a link for updates and registration to receive email notifications. Those wishing to opt out must do so by November 23, 2025, as per Lex Group’s class action notice.
Legal fees will be covered by awarded damages or paid by Rogers, as determined by the court. The text messages were sent following a court order to Rogers to provide a list of affected phone numbers. The lawsuit is expected to last two to three years, covering all of Canada, although Rogers is attempting to exclude some provinces from the case.
